Academics at Brandon Hall
English as a Second Language (ESL)
For students who do not have English as their primary language, Brandon Hall offers an ESL program. The ESL program enrolls first time learners as well as students who have had some English in the past. Students who are participating in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program are usually placed in small group or one-to-one classes when they first begin at Brandon Hall. Individualized instruction allows a student to progress at his/her own rate. As both written and verbal English skills develop and mature, ESL students are gradually moved into larger group classes in mathematics, English, science and social studies. International boarding students are encouraged to speak English only and to share various aspects of their culture and traditions with their peers. Initially a non-English speaker would have 4 ESL periods a day and would be mainstreamed for physical education and an elective (art, music, drama or computers). As his or her ability to read an English textbook improves he or she would be mainstreamed into each academic subject area.
Please note that boy boarding student would need a local guardian, if not in Atlanta, somewhere in the states where he can fly for short holidays. All boarders must depart campus for Thanksgiving, Winter Holidays, Spring Holidays and Passover/Easter Holidays.
The Summer School ESL program is designed to increase skills in reading, writing, and roal expression for international students. Upper School ESL classes are for credit and will be arranged according to the student's proficiency.>Brandon Hall School is certified by the U.S. Immigration Service to issue I-20 forms to qualifying international students.
Currently, Brandon Hall enrolls students from Korea, Vietnam, England, Turkey, China, Nigeria, South Africa, Bermuda, Israel, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Russia, and Bahrain.
