Evaluation and grading scales

Evaluation
Brandon Hall uses traditional letter grades to evaluate a student’s work and progress. In reviewing a student’s work, the teacher is looking for consistent effort and application as well as consistent improvement. The school perceives the idea of "averaging" letter grades as somewhat undermining and derisive to a student’s learning to do quality work on a consistent basis. In many cases, underachievers tend to rely on the gamble of the average or making high grades at the last minute that will override poorer grades. At Brandon Hall, key words in the evaluation process are "consistency" in improvement and performance as well as "quality" of work. Given the small classes, individual attention, and overall program emphasis; students should normally do well.

In preparing students for college, teachers must keep the standards high so that students perceive and perform the effort and quality necessary for success. Pluses and minuses are also used to help students and parents perceive the quality of work. In evaluating a student, teachers take into consideration the following: the consistency of the quality of work in regard to tests, homework, daily evaluations, projects, class participation, book reports, oral presentations, lab work, etc.
